James Joseph Goen, age 63, resident of Mesa, AZ, passed away very suddenly on March 6 at the Phoenix VA Medical Center in Mesa, AZ. He was born in Beaver Falls, PA to Baylor B. and Agnes N. Goen on February 1, 1949. James graduated from Beaver Falls Senior High School (Blackhawk) in 1967 and attended the Community College of Beaver County, Youngstown University and Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD completing a Computer Science degree. After enlistment in the US Navy in 1971, he was deployed to Vietnam, serving in Danang as Security/Military Police with NAVSUPACT where he was meritoriously decorated. He subsequently completed his military service aboard the USS Puget Sound as Yeoman 3rd Class/Petty Officer. In 1972 he was employed by Western SD Community Action in Rapid City, SD. Returning to Pennsylvania he married Sue Beightly of Beaver Falls and coached Pony League baseball to White Township eleven-year olds for several years. During that time, he worked as a machine operator for Teledyne in Rochester PA and for Standard Steel Specialty in Beaver Falls.
In 1993, James relocated to Arizona and began employment with Pinkerton Security (now Securitas of Stockholm, Sweden) in Chandler, AZ. There he became a distinguished officer, attaining the rank of Captain supervising Pinkerton/Securitas security employees at two Intel Corporation microchip fabrication plants in Chandler and Ocotillo, AZ. His professional security officer career spanned 16 years; he was repeatedly recognized for his outstanding leadership and management skills and was recently named Supervisor of the Year. He was both loved and respected by hundreds of his colleagues.
James is survived by one son, Jeffrey, of Norfolk, VA, two brothers, Baylor B. Goen (wife Janice McCampbell) and William G. Meredith (wife Lois J. Brown), all from Beaver Falls and all now living in Rapid City, SD, and one sister, Rev. Dr. Margaret (Maggie) Goen Moore (and husband Michael J. Bouton) of Cedar Crest, NM. Interment with Military Honor Guard is scheduled at the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD.
James’ death was attributed to multiple health injuries associated with Agent Orange. He was preceded in death by his parents, Baylor and Agnes Goen, both in 1971, in Rapid City, SD; and by his maternal uncle and best friend, Joseph (Sunny) Todd, in 1970, also in Rapid City, SD.
